Laparoscopic Ladd’s procedure is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to treat recurrent midgut volvulus, a condition that occurs when the intestine becomes twisted, leading to obstruction and potentially compromising blood flow. This condition is most common in infants and children, and if untreated, it can lead to serious complications.
During the procedure, the surgeon makes several small incisions in the abdomen and inserts a laparoscope, which is a thin tube with a camera attached to it. This allows the surgeon to visualise the abdominal organs and identify the twisted segment of the intestine. The surgeon carefully untwists the intestines, restoring normal blood flow.
The laparoscopic approach has several advantages over traditional open surgery, including smaller incisions, less postoperative pain, a lower risk of infection, and a shorter recovery time. However, a thorough evaluation is necessary to determine the most appropriate approach for each individual case.
Pritam Biswas from Tripura successfully underwent Laparoscopic Ladd’s Procedure for Recurrent Midgut Volvulus at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, under the supervision of Dr. M. Manisegaran, Consultant Surgical Gastroenterologist-Minimal Access Surgery, Bariatric, Metabolic & Robotic Surgery.
