A high-risk pregnancy is one that involves increased health risks for the pregnant woman, foetus, or both. Certain preexisting health conditions, lifestyle factors (smoking, drug addiction, alcohol abuse, and exposure to certain toxins), and age (being over 35 or under 17) can make a pregnancy high risk.
A high-risk pregnancy can be life-threatening for the pregnant woman or foetus and requires close monitoring to reduce the chance of complications such as preeclampsia, preterm delivery, excessive bleeding during labour and delivery, birth defects, miscarriage, or stillbirth.
Prenatal care is the most effective method of detecting and diagnosing a high-risk pregnancy. Tests to monitor the health of the pregnant woman and foetus may include blood and urine tests, ultrasonography, and a biophysical profile (a noninvasive diagnostic test used to evaluate the health of the foetus). Management may include frequent ultrasounds, closer foetal evaluation, and careful monitoring of medications used to manage pre existing conditions.
