An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac or pouch on the ovary. The common causes of ovarian cysts include polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and cancer, among others. These cysts are common and usually resolve on their own. However, if you have an ovarian cyst that grows larger or causes pain, an ovarian cystectomy is advised.
A laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to remove ovarian cysts. During the procedure, a laparoscope (a thin, lighted tube) is inserted through a small incision in the abdomen. The surgeon then uses special instruments to remove the cyst. The procedure usually takes about an hour and is performed under general anaesthesia.Â
The benefits of a laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy include a shorter recovery time, less pain, and less scarring. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are risks such as infection, bleeding, and organ damage, and in rare cases, the cyst may not be completely removed, resulting in recurrence.
