Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) Leak occurs when there is a tear or hole in the membrane surrounding the brain or spinal cord, leading to the leakage of CSF fluid. It can result from various causes, including trauma, surgery, or certain medical conditions. Symptoms may include headaches that worsen when upright and improve when lying down, nausea, vomiting, neck stiffness, and a clear fluid draining from the nose or ears.
Epidural Blood Patch is a procedure used to treat CSF leaks by sealing the hole or tear in the membrane surrounding the spinal cord. It is done by injecting a small amount of the patient’s own blood into the epidural space around the spinal cord, where the leak is located. The blood forms a clot and creates a seal over the leak, preventing further CSF leakage and allowing the tear to heal.
