Patient Testimonial for Small Bowel Resection Surgery

Testimonial by A. Venkat Reddy

Treatment for: Gastrointestinal Perforation
Treated by: Dr. D. S. Sai Babu
Patient location: Hyderabad

Small bowel resection surgery is performed to remove a diseased or damaged portion of the small intestine. This procedure is often necessary for conditions such as Crohn’s disease, intestinal cancer, bowel obstruction, trauma, or severe infections. Symptoms leading to a small bowel resection may include chronic abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, severe diarrhea, and significant weight loss. When these conditions severely affect the patient’s quality of life or pose a risk to their health, surgical intervention is required to remove the affected section and restore normal bowel function.

In small bowel resection surgery with ileo ileal anastomosis, the patient is placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision in the abdomen to access the small intestine. The diseased or damaged segment of the small intestine is carefully removed. Following this, an ileo ileal anastomosis is performed, which involves connecting the remaining healthy ends of the small intestine (ileum) to restore continuity of the gastrointestinal tract. This connection allows for the normal passage of food and digestive fluids. The procedure can be done using traditional open surgery or minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques, which involve smaller incisions and typically result in quicker recovery times. Post-surgery, patients are monitored for any complications, such as infection or leakage, at the anastomosis site. Recovery involves a hospital stay, during which the patient gradually resumes eating and is monitored for bowel function. Follow-up care includes dietary modifications and medications to ensure proper healing and prevent recurrence of the underlying condition.

Mr. A. Venkat Reddy from Nalgonda successfully underwent Small Bowel Resection Surgery and Ileo Ileal Anastomosis at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, under the supervision of Dr. D. S. Sai Babu, Senior Consultant Surgical Gastroenterologist, Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary Surgeon, Laparoscopic, Bariatric & Metabolic Surgeon.
